A spectacular (and recently acquired) example of the Library’s manuscript collections. This philosophical disquisition from New Spain (1766) emphasizes the Scholastic (Aristotelian) nature of learning in Spain’s colonies. We suspect this was written in Mexico thanks to an enigmatic quotation deep in the manuscript: “Mexico is made up of her citizens, however this [one] citizen is not Mexico.” The connection between human and animal cultures throughout the Americas – evident in the attractive depictions on the cover and elsewhere – is one of the recent, and more exciting, thematic orientations of the Library.
