Kudos to former JCB Fellow Martin Nesvig on the publication of Promiscuous Power (University of Texas Press, 2018), a “rowdy, raunchy, and violent life histories from the archives.” Through a case study of local agents in the province of Michoacán in western Mexico, Nesvig offers an unorthodox look at the history of the colonization of New Spain. Promiscuous Power draws from research that Nesvig, an associate professor of history at the University of Miami, conducted during his 6-month National Endowment for the Humanities fellowship at the JCB in 2007-08.
