JCB Celebrates Board Member Clinton I. Smullyan (1950-2025)
The John Carter Brown Library community is celebrating the life of Clinton I. Smullyan, Jr., who passed away in October. Clint was a vital force for the JCB, having served for over four decades --and through four directors. He served on various committees during his time on the Board of Governors, including the Executive Committee, Finance Committee, Fundraising Committee, Library Committee, Nominating Committee, and various fundraising Campaign Committees.
“He was also so funny and wry, always ready with a witticism,” remembers JCB Director and Librarian Karin Wulf. “I appreciated how much Clint cared about the Library and its success, and how generous he was in all ways. He's truly irreplaceable.”
Wulf explains that the Library staff had officially acknowledged his generosity on more than one occasion. “He is recognized both in the vestibule among major sponsors of the library, and in the cataloging and digital offices downstairs, where his name is on a new bronze plaque designed by longtime JCB associated artist Alba Corrado (and which I'm so glad he saw on his last in person visit). He was also awarded the JCB medal earlier this year. I know how much he appreciated that recognition.” (Read more about Mr. Smullyan’s contributions to the JCB related to cataloging and digitizing the collection here.)
