Trans-American Crossings Conference Attracts Slavery Scholars to Providence
In collaboration with the Omohundro Institute for Early American History and Culture, the JCB welcomed a spectacular group of scholars of slavery to Providence in June 2018. With panel topics ranging from kidnapping and print-culture to medicine and indigenous slavery, participants came together in an intimate environment and had fruitful conversations about the current state of research on these topics. Spearheaded by Alex Borucki (UC-Irvine, and former JCB fellow) and Greg O’Malley (UC-Santa Cruz), the intellectual conversation was rich and engaging for participants and the public alike. As a result of the exceptional quality of the scholarship that was on display, the JCB will make available earmarked fellowships in the history of slavery and the slave trade in the Americas through the Library’s Center for New World and Comparative Studies in 2018-19.
