Dr. Christy Clark-Pujara discussed her book Dark Work: The Business of Slavery in Rhode Island (NYU Press, 2016) as part of the Rhode Island Middle Passage Ceremonies and Port Markers Project and a program series - centered around the transatlantic slave trade - by the Center for the Study of Slavery and Justice and the JCB. Dr. Clark-Pujara shows how the business of slavery in Rhode Island "encouraged slaveholding, slowed emancipation and led to circumscribed Black freedom." Watch the full lecture here.
