The John Hay and John Carter Brown (JCB) Libraries on Brown University’s campus invite local Indigenous community members to an open house and research night at both libraries on the evening of May 1, 2025 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.

In each of the library’s reading rooms, pre-selected primary and secondary source materials from the library’s collections will be available to visit, view and discuss.

The JCB’s collections are focused around the history of the Americas before 1825. The Library’s rich collection of printed books, manuscripts, maps, prints and more supports research inquiry into post- colonial interactions across Indigenous cultures in the Western hemisphere.

The John Hay Library’s collections, global in scope, complement the JCB’s collection in chronology and content, with an additional focus on contemporary Native and Indigenous voice as it appears across various genres of expression including zines, comic books, archival collections, artist books, speculative fiction, poetry and art.

Tribal community members interested in Indigenous languages, ethnobotany, placemaking, memory and critical Native and Indigenous studies are encouraged to attend the open house event.

Library staff will be on hand at both locations to provide research support and to discuss further opportunities for research and engagement. Light refreshments will be served separately from the collection viewing areas.
