About the exhibition

Elemental: Crafting Books from Nature
Curated by José Montelongo
From minerals, books obtain their solidity and heft. Plants provide the fibers that become paper and the oils for ink. From animals, they acquire skin to bind, protect, and adorn them. From human beings, they derive the skill and ingenuity to produce them, and the string of words that allow them to speak to us across centuries, even millennia, and across vast distances.
This exhibition highlights the interplay between natural elements and human craftsmanship. We invite visitors to observe the material qualities of these volumes—pieces of wood, embroidered silk and filigree, metallic clasps, marks impressed along the edges, and ink and gold leaf that tattoo the surface of the books.
