"Third Time Lucky" Tikal: A Regional Power in Ancient Guatemala

Héctor Leonel Escobedo Ayala is a Guatemalan archaeologist educated at the Universidad de San Carlos de Guatemala (1991) and Vanderbilt University (Ph.D., 2006). He has led archaeological research projects at the Maya sites of Kaminaljuyú, Ixkún, Sacul, Ixtontón, Dos Pilas, lxtutz, Las Pacayas, Arroyo de Piedra, Punta de Chimino, Piedras Negras, San Bartolo, El Zotz and El Perú-Waka. He is a professor at the Universidad de San Carlos de Guatemala and Universidad del Valle. Escobedo has also served as Minister of Culture and Sports and Vice Minister and General Director of Cultural and Natural Patrimony. Escobedo is the leader of the Cultural Group of PACUNAM, a private foundation dedicated to the conservation of the natural and cultural Maya heritage of Guatemala.

This event is part of the Providence-Guatemala summit, a series showcasing ties between the capitals of Rhode Island and the Central American nation. The John Carter Brown Library will simultaneously display an informal, mini-exhibition of Guatemala-related materials from its collection of primary historical sources.
