Heréndira Téllez Nieto will speak in the Conference Room of the John Carter Brown Library.

The talk will be given in Spanish.

Summary in English:
The John Carter Brown Library holds the most extensive collection of imprints and manuscript works in P’urhepecha. Translations of the Gospels into Mesoamerican languages were of fundamental importance for the process of evangelisation in the first years of New Spain’s colonial history. In the wake of the first bilingual texts in Latin and Nahuatl, the Gospels were subsequently rendered into Otomí and P’urhepecha. The immense effort made during the sixteenth-century to translate the Bible into such indigenous languages will be the subject of this talk, which lays particular emphasis on comparisons between the Nahuatl and P’urhepecha Gospels, and on the ultimate fate of these translations which were prohibited by the Council of Trent and the Inquisition of Mexico.
