JCB Fellow Asiel Sepúlveda, a PhD Candidate in Art History at Southern Methodist University studying the visual productions that emerged from the British occupation of Havana in 1762, completed his two-month Jeannette D. Black Memorial Fellowship in September and October 2018. While in residence, Asiel not only uncovered some of the hidden gems of the collection – like this mid-18th century peep box depicting the port and hills of Havana – but immersed himself in the JCB’s broader intellectual community and its activities. During his first week, Asiel participated in the Early Modern Global Caribbean Symposium, held at the Library and supported by a grant from the Gladys Krieble Delmas Foundation. This event, according to Sepúlveda, gathered a star-studded network of scholars at the JCB and inspired his consultation of books and visual materials during the entirety of his fellowship.
