Historie von Grönland

David Cranz
1765-1770

Histories of missionary projects sometimes end up remaining relevant for a different reason. In this History of Greenland, the German missionary David Cranz (1723-1777) devotes most of the pages to the history of the Herrnhuter Büdergemeinde (Moravian Church) mission in Greenland. At the same time, the work is the first attempt at an ethnographic description and history of the Inuit culture. It contains detailed information on the natural history and the climate of Greenland. The work was translated into Dutch, Danish, Swedish, English and remained popular well into the 19th century.
