Agustín de Iturbide was the first modern emperor of Mexico, but he was not the last. His “First Empire” lasted from 1821-23. While Iturbide’s conservative tendencies have made him a controversial figure in Mexican history, the period marked by his rule was extremely important. Hearkening back to the importance of sugar, both for a slave economy and for the production of sweetness, this book is important more for the individual who owned it than for the item itself, but it does make the suggestion that the economic prosperity of Mexico should be based upon sugar and other semi-tropical agricultural products.
