María de Jesús de Agreda
1600s

María Coronel y Arafia (1602-1665) became the abbess of the Franciscan Convent of the Immaculate Conception in Ágreda (Spain) at the age of 25 and was one of the most famous mystics of the 17th century. She is known for the twenty-two years long correspondence with Felipe IV and the many reports of her bilocation between Spain and its colonies in New Spain (Texas, New Mexico). Her most famous work, The Mystical City of God (1670), is considered a highlight in Baroque Spanish literature. This rare manuscript copy of the unpublished The Roundness of the Earth, describes the different regions of the world, including a mystical description of America and of how the earth looks from space.
